Förlagets beskrivning
How do trade unions learn?
In the first empirical study of learning in unions, Tony Huzzard furthers our knowledge of union renewal in a comparative study of learning in the two main Swedish manufacturing unions, Metall and SIF.
A new framework of organisational learning is developed that highlights the significance of narratives and how these link learning processes between various organisational levels.
The study analyses learning at both the national level and the workplace and constructs a typology of learning processes.
It also shows how learning in a homogenous blue-collar union contrasts with that of its more heterogeneous white-collar counterpart.
In an era when knowledge is increasingly seen as a crucial factor of production, trade unions are beginning to take on new roles that require a capacity to learn.
The author argues for the concept of a ëlearning democracyí as a set of managerial principles and organisational characteristics better suited to support learning than the more traditional union model of representative democracy.
