Förlagets beskrivning
Do we need a new history of the Second World War? This was one of the important problems discussed at an international symposium in August 1995, arranged by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and the Department of History at Stockholm University. How has the experience of the Second World War left its mark on the different European nations? What role have wartime experiences had for nations' understanding of themselves? What national myths have been created out of the war? How has the writing of a nation's history responded to these myths? These fundamental questions are examined in this anthology with contributions by well-known historians and experts from nine nations: Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and the five Nordic Countries. The contributions provide thought-provoking perspectives and surprising conclusions about the consequenses and meaning of World War II. It concerns the importance of the resistance movements and the controversial question how we 50 years after the war interpret the policies of collaboration and adaptation in Hitler's Europe. Contributors: Hans Mommsen, Natalia S Lebedeva, Nikolai P Kolikov, Brian Loring Villa, John Keegan, Henning Poulsen, Matti Klinge, Ole Kristian Grimnes, Stefán Hjartarson, Alf W Johansson, Stig Ekman.
