Central Power and Local Society in the Eighteenth-Century Nordic States
To rule in Old Regime Europe always meant to compromise. Even in the most consistent royal absolutism in Europe, that of Denmark-Norway, local interest groups could use judicial and administrative channels to fight for their rights, against each other or against the state. This was even more the case under the representative government in Sweden, where there was also a true political channel in the diet of the four estates.
A lively and diversified political culture is uncovered in this study of decision-making and influence in the two Nordic states in the eighteenth century. The book summarizes the findings of historians from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, cooperating in the project “Central Power and Local Society”.
