Förlagets beskrivning
In Against the Grain Reed Whittemore's third person narration gives us glimpses into the wide-ranging literary life of his alter ego R. R began that literary life as an undergraduate in the late thirties at Yale where he and roommate James Angleton (later, CIA chief of counter- intelligence) founded Furioso, a poetry journal that under the initial "tutorship" of Ezra Pound published some of the leading modernists, among them Willliam Carlos Williams, E.E. Cummings, Richard Eberhart, Marianne Moore and Pound himself.
Then came WWII. During four years in North Africa and Italy, R carried on an intense correspondence with Arthur Mizener, mentor and future biographer of F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Far Side of Paradise) that reveals R's preoccupations early on with the role of poetry in American culture. Back home he wholly revamped Furioso -- "the ne plus ultra of little mags," writes Victor Navasky -- with friends Howard Nemerov, John Pauker and others. His first book of poetry Heroes & Heroines in 1946 coincided with his coming to Carleton College in Minnesota. R taught and wrote there for nearly 20 years, founding The Carleton Miscellany in 1960.
Whittemore and his family moved to Washington in 1964-65 where he was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now U.S. Poet Laureate), returned to Minnesota, and a year later moved back for good. While R went on to teach at the University of Maryland, he was also literary editor and prolific reviewer for The New Republic, leaving in the mid-70s to write a biography of William Carlos Williams and, then several books on the development of the genre itself. His book of poems, The Mother's Breast and the Father's House, was nominated for the National Book Award
