Förlagets beskrivning
'A record of a unique experiment in urbanism'. Chicago is a city internationally renowned for pioneering work in development. The two volumes of "Fold-Out Futures" expand the framework of the Chicago Project - a joint experiment between artists from RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) and ECA (Edinburgh College of Art). The first volume acts as a visual primer for the work which was developed in Chicago. The second volume is a collection of critical essays which set the project in context. 'Fold-Out Futures' was an experiment that traced and recorded the experience of the city of Chicago through the different perceptions of a group of unrelated participants. Their interaction with the city took many forms: random conversations, invitations to events, films, and individual experience of the fabric and life of the city. Out of the process, from a studio in the heart of downtown Chicago, personal reactions, isolated attributes and elements were isolated and used to prioritize the nature and direction of new work. The work made in the Chicago studio was not so much about retroactive appraisal, but rather the nurturing of small nodes and extensions of visual experience and perception which developed during the course of the temporary residency. Its impact has continued to be effective and inform strategies for new collaborative working methods
