On My Way to Grandma's House is one volume in a series of instructional math stories designed to help parents, teachers and students Calm, Command and Conquer the Curriculum. By integrating a simple story with a detailed learning strategy, the Math MileMarkers books help build strong foundational skills and a deeper understanding of the math concepts embedded within. At first glance, our story about Lily River and the adventures she has trying to get to her grandmother's house, seems to focus primarily on the concept of rounding numbers, a standard identified in the Number and Base Ten content standards found in grades 3, 4 and 5. However, rather than looking at rounding as an isolated skill, Math Mile-Markers uses this opportunity to encourage teachers and children to explore using the number line as a tool for rounding numbers in places they may never have been before. Think about it: how often do children have the opportunity to "play" on a number line that stretches to the nearest ten thousand or to the nearest thousandth? Companion activities-including MileMarkers "Math Talk", which outlines the big ideas presented in each story, and Storyboard Templates, which provide a framework for children to "Retell or Recreate" one of our stories using their own selection of numbers or key ideas-are available at www.mathmilemarkers.com.
