This is an InstaRead Summary of Miracles and Massacres: True and Untold Stories of the Making of America by Glenn Beck. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Author's Note In this book, the author's goal is to share stories throughout American history that are both well-known and unknown. He stresses that America is not good or bad based off of its history, even though good and bad events took place. Instead we are to learn from them to keep from repeating mistakes. 1: Jack Jouett: The Ride That Saved America The books opens with Captain John "Jack" Jouett racing through the night to Thomas Jefferson's estate in Monticello with the future of the revolution quite probably dependent on how fast (or slow) he got there. We are then taken back to an hour prior, when Jouett had taken a British prisoner. After changing clothes with him, Jouett puts his life in danger to go hang around Cuckoo tavern in hope that he will over hear important information from the other side. Just when he thinks he has no luck because most of the patrons are on the American side, he encounters the infamous Colonel Banastre Tarleton, commander of the Dragoons, within earshot. Jouett is able to make out the words Monticello and Charlottesville, and that was all he needed to know. Springing forward once again, Tarleton's knowledge of unrest among the Continental soldiers is revealed. The soldiers are unpaid and there are massive shortages of food and supplies. Playing to this weakness, Tarleton has tried to lure the soldiers away with the promises of fortune and good military appointments. The tension is high, especially since the Pennsylvania soldiers carried out a mutiny on New Year's Day. General George Washington is well aware of the problem as well, having had first hand experience with it three years ago during a winter at Valley Forge. Money wasn't so much the main problem as were the poor conditions the soldiers had to live in. Washington knows that he needs to show that mutinies are not acceptable, and he does so by executing the instigators. Tarleton secretly admires him. Jouett is still racing towards Monticello in a desperate attempt to reach it and warn the men inside of the impending attack from Tarleton and his men. It is crucial that Jouett succeeds because inside the estate along with Jefferson are Patrick Henry, Benjamin Harrison, Richard Henry Lee, and Thomas Nelson, all signers of the Declaration of Independence. They are probably discussing war tactics. Tarleton and his men decide to take a break, unaware that Jouett is ahead of them with the warning. General Cornwallis had given Tarleton the assignment of capturing Jefferson a few weeks earlier. A young British Dragoon approaches Tarleton and Tarleton proceeds to tell him about the great deeds he has done, referring to himself in the third person the whole time. He is an evil and cruel man, and has a reputation for it. He once comes across twelve wagons full of supplies to be sent to soldiers in South Carolina and happily burns them. He breaks into Dr. Thomas Walker's, guardian to Jefferson when he was younger, home as dawn breaks and forces him and his wife to feed him and his crew. Jouett succeeds in beating Tarleton to Monticello and informs Jefferson of the situation. Jefferson remains rather calm, arranges for his wife and children to be sent away, and he and the other men depart his beloved estate, looking back at the flag raised to signal that the property has been occupied. Jouett continues riding to his father's inn, warning him as well. General Stevens, a state senator, is there, wounded, and Jouett has a plan to disguise him and lead Stevens and his men away
