Father-child interactions are thought to benefit children's development by supporting positive outcomes and buffering negative outcomes (Halle et al., 1998). As we see a decline in the proportions of children living with their fathers' policy makers, researchers and practitioners are paying more attention to father involvement (Coley, 2000; Lamb, 1997). Thirty-three percent of American children live in homes in which their biological father does not reside (U.S. Census Bureau, 2009). For African American children, the percentage living apart from their father doubles. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2009) sixty-four percent of African American children, live in homes in which a father is not present. In an effort to address the developmental needs of children, fatherhood has emerged as an important policy issue on national and local levels. In 1994, the Ford Foundation funded the 'Strengthening Families' initiative, a multi-state coordinated effort to support love-income, non-resident fathers to remain involved with their children (Sylvester & Reich, 2002). The National Fatherhood Initiative was developed to facilitate and encourage responsible fatherhood. This emergent concern for father involvement is supported by research that has consistently found father involvement to be an asset to children's well-being (Amato, 1998; Mosely & Thomson, 1995; Nord, et.al., 1997; Wentzel & Feldman, 1993; Robbers, 2008).
