Before my twenty-first birthday, I had flown over 1, 500 combat missions. I carried far more baggage home from those experiences than I was clutching in my two, bronzed arms as I de-planed, back in Texas.
My military service had come on the heels of an abusive childhood...injected, at age six, with a devastating trauma where my developing mind was exposed to horrific scenes of utter devastation. The images my young eyes took in conspired with the ongoing turbulence and abuse at home, encumbering me with notable emotional and behavioural issues. Originating from the earliest phase
of my life, I was presided over by a potent mental illness. My dysfunction proved to be a virtually insurmountable barrier in experiencing healthy relationships and engaging in a productive lifestyle. As I spent years overcoming these burdens I grew in depth of compassion and sturdiness of character...as I transformed from a man incapable of love, to a man incapable of hatred.
