A wedding was on foot. The house at Minster Street was full to overflowing with friends and relations of the M'Queen family-cousins, and half- cousins, and many indescribable relationships. The gay wanderer, Mrs Cocker, had got back to her "'umble abode, " as she was wont to call Dacre Cottage. A troop of Simples from Edinburgh occupied two of the spare bedrooms, and the others which were not spare had sundry folding-down beds in every available corner for the accommodation of aunts and cousins from all parts of Great Britain. This is the wedding-day of Charles Buchan and Mary Hardfoot. The bride is already attired in a gorgeous satin dress, with a very long train. A wreath and veil flow over its soft, luxuriant folds, and nearly sweep the ground. All is ready for the arrival of the carriages to convey the party to church. Poor little Mary, the centre ofthe group, is all agitation and tears. She is going to give her happiness into the keeping of another. May he prove worthy of the trust! Mary had been a happy and useful member of her sister's household : she is going to occupy a new and untried position as wife to the elder of the two Doctors Buchan. All hearts were with her as she stood at the altar with her chosen husband, and not a few tears were shed as he led her away, his own for evermore. The breakfast and cutting up of the cake were soon over, and the party left to its own devices.
