I hold a master's degree in education, and I am an educator with more than a dozen years of classroom experience in public schools. My experiences in the public schools have been quite varied. I have taughtin elementary, middle, and high school. Additionally, I have taught in the capacity of a general education instructor and as a special education teacher. The varied experiences have provided me with a wealth ofknowledge concerning various topics related to problems facing public schools. This lack of writing ability is also a microcosm of all academic diffi culties so many public school students experience. Why do they perform so poorly? Many reasons exist, including behavior problems, uninvolved parents, and undue interference from governmentoffi cials who know little or nothing about what is best for public schools. Perhaps the most prevalent cause of poor student performances is the fact that youngsters are so distracted by insatiable appetites for various forms of entertainment that cause them to be totally disinterested in all things academic.
