Restoring Democracy, Rule of Law and Peace in Niger/Jamhuriyar Nijar:A grave violation of Democracy and Rule of Law, Mr. Abdourahamane Tchiani detained Niger's elected president, President Bazoum, at the presidential palace in Niamey. It happened, because the President fired him. And little Abdourahamane Tchiani is very angry about that :)Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum stated that he will protect the hard-won democratic gains made in a country that saw four coups since gaining independence in 1960. Niger's minister of foreign affairs, Hassoumi Massoudou, also called for the President's unconditional release. Bazoum took office in 2021, marking Niger's first-ever democratic transition. Seen as one of the great leaders in the Sahel, notably in the fight against Islamist insurgents, his detention drew quick condemnation from the Global Community. UN chief Antonio Guterres called for Bazoum to be released immediately and unconditionally, telling the soldiers to stop obstructing the democratic governance of the country and respect the Rule of Law. The International Community strongly condemns any attempt to seize power by force and joins the calls of the African Union and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to restore the integrity of Niger's democratic institutions. President Bazoum stated in the Washington Post, that he is a hostage and called on the International Community to restore constitutional order. "e;This coup, launched against my government by a faction in the military on July 26, has no justification whatsoever. If it succeeds, it will have devastating consequences for our country, our region and the entire world."e;US President Joe Biden has called for the immediate release of Niger's elected president and for the country's Democracy to be restored. The African Union did likewise, saying its troops would join a military intervention if necessary. Hence we are calling for the release of President Mohamed Bazoum - so that Democracy, Rule of Law and Economic Stability can be restored in the Republic of the Niger. PS: We emphasize that the safety and security of President Bazoum and his family are paramount; and that they must be released.
