Förlagets beskrivning
This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has a collection of federal documents and resources about the Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex, prevention of nuclear smuggling, and the reliable replacement warhead program. Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear energy. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad. NNSA's future path is to establish a smaller, more efficient Nuclear Weapons Complex that is able to respond to changing national and global security challenges. By 2030, NNSA will employ a smaller, safer and more secure nuclear weapons stockpile that has assured reliability over the long term, and is backed by the industrial and design capabilities needed to respond to changing technical, geopolitical or military needs. There is also coverage of the Y-12 Oak Ridge complex. Operated by BWXT Y-12 for the National Nuclear Security Administration, Y-12 plays a vital role in the Department of Energy's Nuclear Weapons Complex. Y-12 helps ensure a safe and reliable U.S. nuclear weapons deterrent. The facility retrieves and stores nuclear materials, fuel the nation's naval reactors, and performs complementary work for other government and private-sector entities.
Megaports Initiative - Ninety percent of the world's trade occurs via container cargo shipped in and out of seaports. If left unprotected, the world's largest and busiest seaports could be used by terrorists to smuggle or traffic nuclear material. It is important to the security of the United States and the rest of the world that cargo shipped through seaports is screened for hazardous materials that could be used to make a "dirty bomb", or even worse, a nuclear weapon. Working together with other countries to inspect the cargo efore it enters a U.S. port is critical to keeping America safe from a nuclear terrorist attack
