It is their judicious application to practical utility which gives them value, and this supposes a more ex tended acquaintance with the individual facts or details of science than be yet possesses. It is in this knowledge of detail, and not in the mere abstract knowledge of principles, that profundity consists. Principles, after all, are but con~ elusions drawn from many individual facts; and though the details of a science may be said to be involved or wrapped up in its principles, yet he who has but learned its principles is no wiser than the man who, knowing the conclusion of a syllogism, is ignorant of the data on which it is founded - of the premises from which it is drawn.
