Now, the greatest number of Chickasaws that ever em igrated, including their slaves, as the Chickasaws are now prepared to prove, did not reach Out of these near five hundred commuted their subsistence and were paid in money by the United States. This would leave In dians and negroes to whom rations were issued, and this number is a most liberal estimate. The allowance of a ration a day for the eighteen months for which rations were drawn would give rations, instead of say 000 or thereabouts, making a difference of rations, which, at 13 cents a ration, would amount to In this estimate the most favorable numbers for the United States are assumed, as the Chickasaws are ready to prove; and further, it is made on the supposition that there were no deaths on the way, whereas, as is well known, large numbers were carried off by small-pox. In the neighbor hood of Fort Coffee 800 at least died of this disease!
