Förlagets beskrivning
Excerpt from Virgil and Pollio: An Essay on Virgil's Eclogues II V When old Horace, the freedman, took his son to Rome to make something better of him than an auctioneer or a collector of debts, Virgil, the future friend of young Horace and his elder by five years, was preparing at a college in Cisalpine Gaul for a career which was likewise soon to bring him to the capital. Both of them, almost from their very infancy, were considered by their parents to have that spark of genius in them which if nurtured by careful training, would be sure, to blaze into a bright flame and to repay any cost or trouble expended on their education. Both were destined for a public career, the only one in those days that was thought fit for men of real talent. Most fortunately for the generations that followed, neither of them met with success. Horace, when completing his studies at Athens, got a place as a military tribune in the army of Brutus, and if Brutus had got the better of the triumvirate, he might have entered the senate and spent the best part of his life and talent in an inequal struggle against better-born competitors for office.
