With the birth of No Child Left Behind, it is not surprising that parent involvement in school is at the forefront of the educational issues of today. It is important for parents to send their children to school and it is equally as important for parents to take an active role in the education of their children. This involvement must be a constant variable as the child transitions from elementary school to middle school to high school. Research indicates that family involvement in schools increases student achievement (Henderson & Berta, 1994; Batten & Moles, 1994; Epstein, 1995). Numerous reports and studies provide documentation that regardless of the ethnicity, socio-economic status, and/or cultural background, parental involvement in a child's education is a major factor in determining success in school.
The purpose of this study was to examine parent perceptions of parent-teacher communication in secondary schools and explore what happens when parents talk to their children's teachers. The study also delved into prior research on improving parent-teacher communication and parental involvement. The review of literature includes a historical perspective, benefits of parental involvement, problems with parent-teacher communication, and prescribed measures for overcoming parental involvement barriers. Additionally, close examination of parent perceptions for low, middle and high achieving high school students is discussed and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was utilized for data analysis purposes. Descriptive statistics was utilized and the prescribed methodology included the use of Pearson Chi Square. Recommendations for future research concluded this study along with a listing of various references which were of relevance
