Förlagets beskrivning
Deficits in executive functioning have been found when children with ADHD are compared to same-age peers. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy & Kenworthy, 2000) was designed to assess executive functioning in eight subdomains. According to previous research, the authors of the BRIEF claim the Working Memory subscale can differentiate children with ADHD from children without ADHD based on profile difference in levels of dysfunction. Furthermore, they claim the Inhibit subscale can differentiate between children with the two primary subtypes of ADHD. The current study examined results on the BRIEF to determine if scores on the Working Memory subscale differentiate children with ADHD from those without ADHD based on previous diagnosis, and if the Inhibit subscale will distinguish between the subtypes of ADHD, thus replicating previous results. To determine whether comparisons of mean scores on the BRIEF are meaningful, the current study conducted a psychometric analysis of the BRIEF to determine whether differences exist between children with ADHD and those without ADHD, as well as differences in the subtypes of ADHD, in the constructs, biases in the scales, or true differences on this measure. Archival data from the medical records of several Chicago-area psychology practices were examined. Two sets of analysis were conducted, one comparing ADHD and non-ADHD groups, and one comparing ADHD-I and ADHD-C groups. Logistic regression was utilized to detect differential item functioning (DIF) on the subscales where mean differences between groups were observed. When ADHD and non-ADHD groups were compared, mean differences were observed on four scales. When ADHD-I and ADHD-C groups were compared, a mean difference was found on one scale. Psychometric analysis yielded interaction effects on a total of four items on two different subscales. Furthermore, group intercept effects, which indicate a group bias, were observed on a total of six different items on three different subscales. All of the items on each subscale contributed to measuring the subscale construct. Overall, while biased items were found on the BRIEF, it is unlikely that these biased items negatively impact the overall effectiveness of the assessment of executive dysfunction in the various domains
