Förlagets beskrivning
This quantitative research study examines the ways that personal relationships (marital or family roles), and informal networks (personal-acquaintance relationships with colleagues) impact the career attainment of Black women in the United States. Black women remain underrepresented in the executive-level managerial ranks in many organizations and industries in spite of their growing economic significance in the decades following the legal dismantling of race- and gender-discrimination policies in the United States. Specifically, this research investigates how professional and personal relationships support (or obstruct) the career experiences of 348 Black women, examining their circumstances and experiences and differentiating those circumstances and experiences from those of other groups (e.g., white women and other minorities). Dependent variables include objective measures (i.e., upward career mobility measured by respondent's position and rate of promotion) and subjective measures (i.e., the respondent's perceived success). The independent variables include networking activities, features of home and family life, and the interaction of personal and professional relationships. Six null-hypotheses are explored and either accepted or rejected through multiple regression statistical testing and analysis. The survey results indicate statistically significant relationships between Upward Career Mobility and Networking Activities; Perceived Success and Networking Activities; and Networking Activities and Marital and Family Roles. Contrary to expectations, results show no statistical relationships between Upward Career Mobility and Marital and Family Roles; Perceived Success and Marital and Family Roles; and Perceived Success and Upward Career Mobility
