Culture surrounds us and provides the framework for our system of values giving direction to all of our major life activities. Cultures of communities, regardless of their location or ethnicity provide the lenses through which school and leaning are viewed, valued, and conducted. The present study examines the influence of community culture on student achievement within a majority Hispanic (Puerto Rican) community. Other communities in the United States experience low academic success rates with Hispanic students, often categorizing them as being in an at-risk portion of the population. The students in the current study experience high levels of academic success, leading to all students graduating from high school and most continuing on to college level post secondary education. The study examines the influence of community culture expressed through parent and student expectations for education on student achievement. Using correlation analysis of record and public survey data, and student performance on nationally normed assessments in core curriculum, the study investigates the relationships between community cultural expectations and student achievement, school system expectations of engaging all students in a rigorous curriculum, and the influence of improving student achievement on parent and student expectations. The data examined were drawn from system customer satisfaction surveys from school years 2006-2007 and 2008-2009; local school improvement surveys; and academic and demographic data for the student group from the 2007-2008 school year including standardized achievement assessments. Analysis of these data indicates that a relationship between community expectations for achievement and academic performance does exist. The data also revealed positive correlations between rigorous courses taken and improved academic achievement. The findings also suggest that improvements in achievement can result in a reciprocal change in community expectations
