This study extends the established conscious goal-setting theory model---goals affect performance and the relationship is moderated by goal commitment---by examining both goals and commitment at the subconscious level. Three experiments were conducted to test effects on performance between: conscious goals and subconscious commitment construct (Experiment 1), subconscious achievement goals and conscious commitment (Experiment 2), and subconscious achievement goals and subconscious commitment (Experiment 3). Results showed that commitment can be primed to significantly affect performance, and primed subconscious commitment significantly interacts with conscious goal difficulty to affect performance. However, primed or conscious commitment did not interact with primed achievement goals
