Förlagets beskrivning
While there is substantial literature on attitudes toward mental illness among various populations, there is a gap in the empirical literature on attitudes toward psychotherapy, specifically, and the influence of a therapy preparation on both Orthodox and Conservative Jewish preadolescents has not been well researched. Using a convenience sample of approximately 60 preadolescent boys and girls recruited from the schools and the general community, attitudes toward psychotherapy were assessed using The Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help, a four-point Likert Scale, with choices ranging from "agree" to "disagree" that asks questions that pull for attitudes toward and willingness to seek, psychotherapy. A single score from 0-30 represents the subject's overall attitude. Preadolescents who were exposed to the content of a book titled "Feeling Better" (Rashkin, 2005), about a child who sees a psychotherapist, had a more positive attitude about psychotherapy than those who were not exposed to the book. The attitudes of participants to psychotherapy were measured before and after the intervention. A statistically significant difference was obtained supporting the contention that the book's central positive message about counseling and psychotherapy for children in fact had a positive impact on children's attitude toward seeking the assistance of a counselor to help with emotional issues (t (29)-4.620, p = .000)
