Förlagets beskrivning
Scholars argue that identities develop through dynamic interactions with the environment, involving complex processes of internalizing beliefs, behaviors and values that structure one's understanding of self and their surrounding world. Research demonstrates that one's environment plays a key role in human development, self-construal, resiliency and overall mental health. A review of the literature demonstrates that internalized cultural messages about salient reference groups---such as race, gender or sexual orientation---may result in identity conflicts and deleterious mental health outcomes, particularly for marginalized identities. However, little is known of the interplay and variability of salient identities, or how identity dimensions predict psychological distress or well-being. The current study investigated the interconnectedness and variability of identities within a sample of gay, White men (N = 636). Internalized messages relevant to racial, gender and sexual orientation reference groups were measured by the following independent scales: Internalized Homonegativity Inventory (IHNI; Mayfield, 2001), Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS; O'Neil, Helms, Gable, David & Wrightman, 1986) and Psychosocial Costs of Racism to Whites (PCRW; Spanierman & Heppner, 2004). A measure of psychological health and well-being assessed multiple dimensions of positive and negative mental health outcomes. Multiple correlation and regression analyses evaluated the relationships among identity dimensions as well as the overall contributions of these reference groups to mental health outcomes. Results indicated that psychological distress was best accounted for by heteronormative, sexist and racist attitudes, while gay-affirming attitudes, gender role flexibility and anti-racist values best accounted for psychological well-being. Limitations and implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed
