Förlagets beskrivning

This study attempted to discover how those who are addicted to opiate and other drugs (OOD) and have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will differ on certain variables from the Rorschach Comprehensive System (Exner) from those addicted to OOD who do not have PTSD. The psychological dimensions that were investigated are related to the symptom clusters associated with the DSM IV diagnosis of PTSD. Those symptom clusters include trauma related hyperarousal, trauma related avoidance and trauma related re-experiencing episodes. Those psychological dimensions were chosen for this study because it seems that exposure to psychological trauma is pervasive in the general population and even more so for those who are addicted to opiate and other drugs. Discovering those symptoms in those who are addicted to opiate and other drugs and who are seeking treatment, can lead to more effective treatment planning and treatment outcome. It was hypothesized that those OOD addicts with PTSD will have an increase in m responses, decrease in H responses, have more XU%, more x-%, more x+%, more D and AdjD, more HVI., higher Isolate/R, and more Afr than those OOD addicts without PTSD. All participants in the Comp Drug outpatient treatment program completed the Impact of Event Scale-Revised and the Los Angeles Symptom Checklist as screening devices for PTSD. Those that agreed to participate completed those two instruments and were then separated into two groups, those with PTSD (n=I5) and those without PTSD (n=15). Each patient who agreed to participate was administered the Rorschach Ink Blot Method using Exner's Comprehensive System. The findings indicated that only the distorted form variable (x-%) (Rorschach variable that is related to reality testing) reached a statistically significant level in showing a difference between the two groups. Two other variables approached significance, the inanimate object movement variable (m) (Rorschach variable that is related to situational stress) and the affect ratio (Afr) (Rorschach variable that is related to willingness to engage in emotionally charged situations). Implications for treatment and assessment are provided, as are limitations and future research discussion
