This study explored intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors in the decision of recent Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) graduates to pursue bachelors' degrees. This exploratory study collected data using an Internet survey. The data was analyzed to examine relationships between extrinsic and intrinsic factors and pursuit of a bachelors' degree. Extrinsic factors considered included the availability of 100% tuition assistance, support of middle and senior leadership, availability of on- and off-base and distance learning colleges and universities, Air Force emphasis on education, and availability of support for educational goals. Intrinsic factors included commitment to learning, sense of personal ability to learn, future employment, commissioning, and personal goals. Of these, three factors were identified as bearing a significant correlation to the decision to pursue a four-year degree, personal commitment to learning, commissioning opportunities, and the availability of distance learning opportunities. It was expected that the study will assist CCAF faculty and staff and Air Force education services staff in providing college programs best suited to the needs of Air Force enlisted members. While the study is not generalizable beyond CCAF graduates, it suggests directions for further research regarding factors promoting degree completion among adult military college students
