The goal of this project is to improve the acoustic performance of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in two music performance spaces at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. From an acoustics standpoint, the HVAC systems in the Durgin Hall Concert and Recital Halls were poorly designed and constructed. These noisy systems prevent the halls from being used as effective performance, teaching, and recording spaces. Through theoretical and practical analysis using mechanical drawings, noise measurements in the halls, and computer simulations, the most problematic elements are identified. Solutions to those problems are designed and their predicted acoustic improvements are modeled, calculated, and presented
