Where we live shapes the circumstances of our lives; community determines opportunities and limitations. While much research has focused on the effect of community on housed populations, limited research has examined the effect of community on the homeless circumstance. This research systematically examines multivariate regression models that assess space (perceived access to services) and place (depressive symptomology) outcomes among the homeless living in two distinctly different communities: Northwest Arkansas and Birmingham, Alabama. General hypotheses are derived with the expectation that in testing a place-based model, a consistent set of predictors will emerge across the two sample communities. In addition, in testing a space-based model, the predictors should be different across the two sample communities. Descriptive results compare the two communities and homeless samples; regression results provide preliminary support for the distinction between place (CES-D) and space (Access to Services)
