Excerpt: ...gratify the pride and worldliness of the human heart, he might have obtained a favourable hearing, but he could not say a word on the subject of his doctrine without exasperating the high priest and council against him; which he did not as yet feel himself called upon in duty to do. But why should Jesus tell the high priest what he knew already? His works were not done in a corner, nor was his doctrine delivered in secret. This is the ground therefore which he takes. He urges the publicity of his preaching; and appeals to the great body of the Jews who heard him, "I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold they know what I said." When Jesus here affirmed that in secret he had said nothing, his words must be understood to mean, nothing contrary to what he taught in public, nothing on account of which he was worthy to be arraigned before them. It would be folly to suppose that when apart from the multitude he did not speak to his disciples on the subject of religion. We know that what he delivered to the people in parables he expounded privately to them. He taught his disciples the same thing more fully than he taught it to the multitude; but he did not teach the multitude one thing and his disciples another; so that if in his public teaching not one word could be laid hold of which hinted that he was going to set up an earthly kingdom, or to destroy the law and the prophets, he could truly say, that neither in his private conversations with his disciples had any such word fallen from him. Could any thing be more temperate than this answer? It was
