Etidronate has not been approved by the FDA for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis On May 3, 1990, the published the results of a three-year, random-New England Journal of Medicine ized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in Denmark which found that spinal bone density was significantly Increased in 20 postmenopausal women who took etidronate compared with 20 post-menopausal women who did not take etidronate ( 1 10 ). In the last two years of the study, the rate of new spinal fractures was significantly lower for the women who took etidronate, but there was no significant difference in the rate of new spinal fractures in the two groups over the full three-year period of the study.
