Mobile Topology 2.3 Evolution of the IEEE 802.16 Standard In 1999, the 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards was established to develop standards and recommended practices to support the development and deployment of broadband WMAN. The following summarizes the standards and amendments that the working group has produced. When the IEEE 802.16-2001 standard, which targeted last-mile broadband wireless access, was first released in April 2001, the WiMAX Forum formed to promote the compatibility and interoperability of IEEE 802.16 technologies. In December 2001, the IEEE 802.16-2001 standard was ratified. It operated in the 10 - 66 GHz frequency range and provided LOS fixed P2P and PMP communications at maximum data rates of approximately 70 megabits per second ( Mbps ). Implementation of the IEEE 802.16-2001 standard was limited because of its LOS requirement and lack of unlicensed spectrum. Because of the shortcomings of IEEE 802.16-2001, three amendments, 802.16a, b, and c, were released during 2004. These amendments improved interoperability, quality of service ( QoS ), and data performance. They also provided the ability to propagate signals from one active device to another ( i.e., mesh networking ) and to have NLOS communications. An IEEE 802.16d amendment was also under development to improve interoperability, but it was later transitioned from a single amendment to a revision project that aggregated IEEE 802.16-2001 and its amendments under a single standard: IEEE 802.16-2004. Versions of IEEE 802.16 prior to IEEE 802.16-2004 are no longer supported by vendors and are not discussed further in this publication. IE
