The sensor is positioned about 1 mm above and centered on the edge of the rotating disc. The rotation is driven by an electrical motor and the rotation rate is monitored by using a photo cell and holes in the disc. Thin pieces ( 0.25 mm thick ) of sheet permalloy on the disc act either as flux concentrators or as flux shunts that shield the sensor from the magnetic flux. Figure 5.
