Not illustrated. 1837 edition. Excerpt: ... the jury in a few minutes concluded that Captain Howes was exactly correct in calling him "von tam tiefe, and de raskally sheat." When called up for sentence on Saturday, he produced two recommendations, in one of which he is called Monsieur Lesise, and designated as singularly skilful in the cure of hard and soft corns. In the other he is called Monsieur Dilleg, who is very expert in extracting teeth, without giving the patient any pain; but had he possessed a specific for softening Judge Thacher's charge, or drawing the teeth of Mr. Parker's biting argument, it would have stood him in better stead, in the hour of his peril. As it was, he was sentenced to the State Prison for the painful period of three years, during which it was vainly hoped that he would exert his professional skill in relieving rebellious grinders, and vexatious and irritating corns, and thereby do much to alleviate the condition of the orderly and industrious community among whom his lines had been providentially cast. By availing himself of the means therein for personal and professional improvement, it was also hoped he would not only come out a better man, but a better dentist and corn-doctor. But all these gratifying hopes were only entertained to be disappointed; for in less than two hours after he was temporarily remanded to jail, he cut his throat from ear to ear with a razor. At dinner time, the turnkey found him lying on his face on his bed, dead. This is the third suicide, within a year, of convicts, in jail, subject to sentences to the State Prison.._¢_. contrary to the laws of Massachusetts. Both fined $5, 00 and costs.
