Flowers axillary, subsolitary, perfect. Sepals and petals 4-6.. Stamens more numerous, usually twice as many as the sepals and petals. Gynoecium of a compound pistil; stigma sessile, slightly notched; ovary 1-celled, with 2 basal anatropous ovules. Fruit follicular, 1-or 2-seeded; seeds with a minute aril or caruncle at the base.
