The father was the first instrument which Licon employed in his attack upon the son. He was led under the walls of the town, and the governor was informed that he had been brought there in order to hold a conference with him; but no sooner had Us found himself in the presence of his son, than a message arrived to the latter from Licon, to the effect that he could only hope to save his father's life by immediate submission to the conqueror. Remonstrances and threats added weight to this declaration, and Usanguey was exhorted to submit at once to the yoke which, sooner or later, must be imposed upon him. Never was a generous heart exposed to such a trial of contending principles as that which overwhelmed Usanguey at this moment. He stood, as it were, between his father and his country, obliged to sacrifice the one or the other, and unable to revenge the death of his sovereign except by consenting to that of his father. He hesitated not, however, and yielding to the dictates of virtue alone, threw himself on his knees, and protested with tears, that though it was not without the most bitter anguish that he consented to witness the death of his parent, in order to save his country, yet the path of duty lay clear before him; and, after all, it was far better for both that one should suffer an honourable death, than that both should live to be despised. If the courage of Usanguey, in this instance, was remarkable, that of Us was still more worthy of admiration; for not only did he refrain from murmuring at his hard fate, but, lauding the patriotism of Usan
