In our reading on both sides of this question of Human Immortality, -- and this has embraced a very large number of authors, -- we have noted many striking passages, a few of which have been introduced into the body of this volume; others have been added as foot notes since completing it: there are still many others, some of which, --for the material is too copious to admit of anything more than here and there certain fragmentary selections, --will, perhaps, serve a useful purpose, by being gathered into this supplementary note, under the two classes to which they belong, and placed side by side on opposite pages. The reader will then be able, at a glance, to see what has been said by various authors, inspired and uninspired, theological, philosophical, polemical and poetical, on this question pro and con. and by comparing these opposing views with each other and with the Word of God, he will be able easily to decide for himself which of these two conflicting theories has the sanction of Scripture, and which is in conflict with it. While this question presents a great variety of phases, there are in reality but two sides to it, or two main theories concerning it.
