Förlagets beskrivning
This book examines and analyzes Americanization, De-Americanization, and racialized ethnic groups in the United States. More specifically, it shows the distinctive effectualness that Americanization and de-Americanization serve in harboring and maintaining the racial status quo where "whiteness" as fundamental to an American cultural identity is established and maintained. The question, then, of who is an American becomes overriding. Although racialized ethnic groups remain unassimilated into the dominant culture, the recognition and celebration of the nondominant cultures are important for multiculturalism. However, the nondominant cultures are tied to cultural otherness. Cultural otherness is looked upon as un-Americanness. For this reason, there is a need to move beyond multiculturalism. Postmulticulturalism, then, would be the new possibility. Yet in order for postmulticulturalism to be realized, two things have to take place: one, America's monocultural state has to be transformed into a multicultural state; and two, "whiteness" has to be denormalized in order to produce a post-white subject
