This handbook takes on one of the most pressing issues of today's society - the question of housing and inequality. It is a cutting-edge edited volume about the (somewhat disputed) interrelationship between housing and the wider welfare state. Although housing scholars generally agree that housing needs be regarded as part of the welfare state, it has proven hard to pinpoint and operationalize its position within it. Similarly, according to Article 25 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has a right to adequate housing; and many countries consequently have aims concerning the 'right to housing'. But what such a right implies and who is responsible for fulfilling this right is debated. Thus, there is a need to redefine the connection between housing and welfare in the light of changes in both welfare regimes and housing systems, looking at different scalar levels. The chapters in this book provide an empirically grounded and theoretically updated perspective of how welfare regimes form housing systems, and how changes in the housing system drive changes in the welfare system in different national contexts. The volume gathers a number of leading international housing researchers and seeks to answer the question of how housing can be understood as part of the welfare state in the 2020's. From this, a theoretical framework for understanding the relation between housing and the welfare state is developed and presented to provide tangible outcomes for policy makers, housing practitioners and key stakeholders to mitigate social, economic and health inequalities.
