The mission of this book is to be Biblically accurate, informative through its many realistic illustrations, suitable for adults and older children, and a good value compared to other similar products. Released in 2011, Bible Stories with Historical Illustrations stands alone in the field of Bible storybooks. With over 500 illustrations from nineteenth-century (1800's) books that were first collected from obscure sources and then digitally enhanced to restore and improve quality, this book is like no other. Most of the famed Bible illustrations by Gustave Dore are included, along with the works of many other talented individuals. The phrase "they don't make them like they used to" certainly can be applied to Bible illustrations, and that will become apparent to anyone who reads this book. Nearly all of the illustrations include a caption with descriptive information. The text of the 233 stories is based on the long-proven Bible Storybook by Elsie Egermeier, first published in the early 1900's. Bible Stories With Historical Illustrations is the Bible Storybook for the new millenium, written in modern language and lavishly illustrated to suit the modern reader's taste. Additionally, Bible Stories with Historical Illustrations includes some elements of stories that were intentionally omitted from Egermeier's book due to violence or for the sake of brevity. Unlike some other Bible storybooks that have received criticism for doing so, Bible Stories with Historical Illustrations does not attempt to moralize or turn Bible stories into lessons. The only lessons are those found within the Bible itself (God punishes those who don't obey him, God is merciful, Jesus is the Savior promised to Adam and Eve, faith can work wonders, etc.) Some minor commentary or reflection on the events is sometimes included, but in general the book follows the text of the Bible fairly closely without introducing new ideas. In development since 2007, Bible Stories with Historical Illustrations has been tailor-made to the specifications of what a Bible storybook should be: (based on a set of guidelines published in 2006 by a scholar of Children's Storybibles) *Staying close to the language of the Bible and avoiding filling in gaps or adding morals to the ends of the stories. *Illustrations which have realistic-looking characters as opposed to sanitized role models. *Suitable for older children and also adults. *The illustrations are not cartoon-like and convey a high degree of expression and emotion, and an overall sense of wonder. *The characters in the stories resemble people from that part of the world. Whether as a book to read for pure enjoyment or part of a structured learning environment such as Bible Study or homeschooling, Bible Stories with Historical Illustrations is sure to prove both enjoyable and educational.
