This comprehensive guide describes the North South Trail, a 77-mile-long path that goes through the countryside along the western border of Rhode Island. The North South Trail begins by the Atlantic Ocean in Charlestown and ends in Burrillville at the border of Massachusetts. This fine, ten year old trail was developed for walking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Written primarily for hikers, the guide has five chapters, along with an Introduction, Appendix, and an Index. In Chapter 1-Maps, there are 36 highly detailed maps of the trail, most of which are based on scanned portions of the 7.5 Minute Series USGS Topographic maps. Chapter 2-Description of the Trail, has 42 pages of written description of the many twists and turns of the trail, with mileage and brief notes on local history and ecology. Chapter 3-Alternative Routes, describes other paths leading off the North South Trail. Detailed maps for these routes are included. Chapter 4-Getting There, gives precise directions for driving to over 50 different places all along the trail. Chapter 5-Camping Along the Trail, lists campgrounds on or near the trail. Thirty-six photographs of the countryside all along the trail are found throughout the guide
