Sensitive yet provocative, non-confrontational yet at times verbally aggressive, strongly left-wing in youth yet later in life verging on reactionary: these contradictions call to mind that hilarious game of "jointly composing a letter" in the Radio 4 panel game "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue". Yet......that was my contradictory father. And this complex personality resulted in some wonderful paintings and drawings which call for wider acknowledgement. Hence this book.
If I hadn't dedicated the book to my mother, Joan, and husband, Paul, I could have dedicated it to Swaledale, so prominently does it figure in my life. The landscape of Swaledale is given prominence in the book, whilst not
overshadowing other subjects, for example the coastal landscape of the Llyn Peninsular in North Wales. Of course,
the paintings are only the most striking aspect of his output, and I have sought, within the text, to show the wide variety of his drawing and illustrative work relative to his life and times.
Finally and inevitably the most difficult aspect of compiling this account has been what to include by way of illustration. I know when it's finished I will ask myself, or Mum will ask me, why not this painting, why not that sketch, such has been the choice. I will simply have to tell myself - it seemed the right choice at the time
