Förlagets beskrivning

USNORTHCOM, USSOUTHCOM, USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, and USPACCOM - the United
States has carved the world into these five pieces with troops and military
leadership in each. According to General Richard Myers, Chairman, Joint Chiefs
of Staff, the 2002 Unified Command Plan prepares the United States for the
future by assigning every area of the globe to a combatant commander's area of
responsibility, thereby streamlining and facilitating the United States'
military relationships with respect to all nations. Outside defense circles the
potential impact of post-1990 American strategic reach - or perhaps overreach -
has not been given sufficient attention. But in this new book with CD-ROM,
Strategy for Empire: U.S. Regional Security Policy in the Post-Cold War Era,
Brian Loveman focuses on this issue and raises several important questions:
Even under the perilous conditions imposed by global terrorism, diffusion of
weapons of mass destruction, and international anarchy, can the United States
afford, and should it seek to justify, assigning responsibility to combatant
commanders for every area of the globe and maintaining a military presence in
well over 100 countries? Can a foreign policy of " This text provides answers to these questions from the perspective of
American presidents, policy makers, military officers, and establishment
think-tanks. This book and the accompanying CD-ROM make available in one place
a synthesis of official and semi-official views of post-1990 security agendas
and of the evolving perception of post-Cold War threat scenarios. The book
begins with security policy declarations by American presidents since 1990. It
then presents the views of military strategists, government policy makers, and
"mainline" think tanks, followed by alternative, critical views from leading
experts on U.S. security policy in most major regions of the world. The CD
contains the full text of seventeen lengthy major policy documents and studies
from 1990 to 2003 mentioned by the authors. It also includes an extensive
bibliography of secondary works that focus on regional security policy during
the post-Cold War period. The CD offers teachers a unique resource that, coupled with the book,
provides a wealth of stimulating material for the classroom. The alternative
views on U.S. security policies make Strategy for Empire ideal for courses on
international relations, international security, American foreign policy, peace
studies, and conflict and conflict resolution. With the documents on the CD
students have easy access to primary sources for papers and for reference.
Compelling and up to date (the book includes two articles on post-Saddam
Hussein Iraq and three on Latin America's efforts to deal with post-September
11 security issues), this provocative new book is sure to promote critical
thinking and spark lively classroom discussion and debate. USNORTHCOM, USSOUTHCOM, USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, and USPACCOM - the United
States has carved the world into these five pieces with troops and military
leadership in each. In this book, Brian Loveman focuses on the potential impact
of post-1990 American strategic reach - or perhaps overreach - beyond defense
circles.
