This book examines the ethnic boundaries and the social hierarchies within them that allow or prohibit perceptions of belonging for American Indian adoptees. This exploration of American Indian transracial adoption examines the structures that allow or prohibit perceptions of belonging and not belonging for American Indian adoptees who were placed in Euro-American families between 1948 and 1967. The structures explored are ethnic boundaries, social hierarchies within the ethnic boundaries and the accumulation, transaction and conversion of social and symbolic capital used to change group membership, or change position within the social hierarchies. Criteria of membership as well as group position within the social hierarchy are deeply rooted in American history, and socially remembered and retold through various channels, including the media, constructed stereotypes, commemorations, and monuments. Previous research has indicated that when American Indian children have been removed from their original ethnic group and placed within a family whose Euro-American membership is unquestioned in the dominant group, conflicted feelings of identity result, leading to variously diagnosed pathologies. Until recently, these pathologies have hidden the contributing role of ethnic membership and social position. In response to the negative impacts and pathologized identities, American Indian transracial adoptees are reaching out to one another, and in the process, are constructing a new social class of their own, with their own criteria of membership
