The book traces the history and people of east-central Arizona much like James A. Michener did in his fictional work on Centennial, Colorado. Arizona s Indian wars are retold from the point of view of Geronimo, the soldiers and the Apache Scouts who pursued him and a settler whose husband was killed. The lynching of three young cowboys the historical event behind The Ox-Bow Incident is told from the perspective of the mob and the victims.
Other characters include Corydon Cooley, who saved a band of friendly Apaches from a massacre; William Flake, an apostate who helped the Latter-day Saints settle five towns; and Alchesay, who killed a rival Apache chief before winning the Medal of Honor.
Story of the American West tells of Hispanics as Conquistadors, Indian fighters and sheep men. Genetics, language and archaeology are used to trace Native Americans from entry into the New World through development of Hopi and Zuni culture to the arrival of Navajos and Apaches
