Helping Boys Connect Through Physical Challenge and Strategic Storytelling Stephen Grant, LCSW; Howard Hiton, LPC; Peter Mortola, Ph.D. How do we approach boys in the counseling professions other than as problems? We have anger management groups, behavior modification plans, and anti-bullying programs, all which serve to intervene in identified problems with predominantly male populations. What is needed is a prevention program to help boys address the issues they face before they become problems. Research demonstrates that boys on the whole lack empathy, social skills, and friendships skills relative to girls. The BAM! guidebook is designed to specifically address these issues in ways that work for active boys. The BAM! guidebook is based on six years of experience offering counseling groups for elementary school boys. In BAM! groups, we utilize strategic storytelling and physical challenges to offer a preventative group experience exposing boys to new perspectives on what it means to be male while helping them to build the relational skills they need to be good men. The guidebook is divided into three parts: In BAM! Orientation, we describe some of the challenges boys face, outline our research base and theoretical orientation, and delineate BAM! group goals. In BAM! Example, we richly illustrate the way we work with boys by telling the story of a complete ten-session BAM! group. In BAM! Instructions, we provide a detailed, step-by-step curriculum for leading BAM! groups, including advice for both men and women leaders
