Förlagets beskrivning
The route to the modern world taken by all East Asian countries includes the experience of colonial absorption within primarily European-centred state-empire systems, severe general crisis in the form of multiple overlapping conflicts and - most recently - the construction of sovereign states, the creation of nations and the elite-dominated pursuit of national development. East Asia is now one of the most dynamic regions in the global system, with highly developed scientific resources, great economic strengths, global trading links and equally powerful financial resources. This book illuminates the historical development trajectory and contemporary circumstances of the countries of the region.
Embracing a cross-disciplinary perspective, Peter Preston summarises the history of the region and goes on to focus upon the rise of East Asia from the ruins of the Pacific War.
The book considers the regions basic strengths/resources and the distinctive elite development strategies of the countries of the region, looking at the ways in which elites have read and reacted to enfolding structural circumstances, formulated development goals and gone on to mobilize their populations. It also examines areas of domestic, intra-regional and international dissent and conflict before asking what further change can be expected in the future.
This book is an important read for students and scholars of East Asian politics, history and development
