Excerpt from The Matthews-Northrup Adequate Travel-Atlas of the United States
It is the hope of the compilers of this book that its arrangement will be found so convenient and systematic that there will be little need of refer ring to an Index; but one as condensed as possible is here given for use in case of difficulty.
The order of arrangement is from general to particular, and the particulars are arranged in alphabetical order. The United States as a whole is treated first, and then the various States follow alphabetically. Cities are placed directly after the States in which they are situated. All Indexes and other matter pertaining to each map will be found immediately preceding or following it.
The Statistics of each State, including its growth, and the growth of all large cities in it, will be found at the commencement of each Index.
The Railroad Index for each State precedes the Index of Places, and covers every mile of railroad in the State.
The first figure shows page of Map, the second figure the begin ning of Text. City Maps in Italics.
