Genesis vii. 12. " And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights." " Noah, in faith receiving the oracle of God concerning things not yet seen, and taking it well, built an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of righteousness according to faith " (Heb. xi. 7) There are two elements of a living faith, judgment and righteousness, the condemnation of all that is not of the Father, and the blessing of all that is of Him. Noah condemned the world because the truth condemned it. His outward act was beforehand a testimony to judgment. Noah in faith possessed this judgment; it is the way of righteousness, and by it he condemned the world. The building of the ark was a witness to the holiness of a righteous Father, whose name is hallowed in the putting away of all evil and the full salvation of the creature. The outward act of Noah expressed his being perfect in his generations-his possession of judgment and of righteousness, in other words, being in Christ Jesus. The condemnation of the world is the manifestation of the Father putting away all that is opposed to His holy name, that the full tide of covenant blessings might flow to all flesh. This condemnation was not because the covenant was not with all flesh, but beqause they walked not according to it; they rejected the condition of election. Among the several mystic numbers mentioned that of the covenant is here found. Yet seven days, says Jehovah, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights. Why yet seven days ? It is the sign of the covenant. Three is the number of the Trinity in whom the covenant is constituted. Four is that of creature life. Thus, seven intimates the relation in which the Most High stands to His creature. Henc
